Using AI as a study partner

You'll learn to use AI to explain things to you, ask it good questions, and check what it says.

Why it mattersAI can save you hours when you are stuck. Used the wrong way, it does your thinking and you learn nothing.

Explanation

You are stuck on an error at 1 a.m. and there is no senior to ask. AI can help. But if it writes the code for you, the next error will stop you again, because you still do not understand.

Think of AI as a senior student sitting next to you. A good senior explains, asks you questions and lets you type. A bad one grabs your laptop and does your assignment. Your job is to keep the laptop.

Use AI to explain, not to do the work. Good questions to ask:

  • "Explain this error in simple words. What is it telling me?"
  • "Explain this code line by line."
  • "Give me a hint, not the answer."
  • "Here is my answer. What is wrong with it?"

A good question has three parts: what you ran, what you expected, and what actually happened. Paste the exact error, not "it doesn't work".

Bad: my code doesn't work fix it
Good: I ran `node hello.js` in VS Code. I expected it to print
"Hello, Nusrat". Instead I got: Error: Cannot find module
'/Users/nusrat/projects/hello/helo.js'. What does this error mean?

AI is often confidently wrong. It can invent commands, functions or links that do not exist. This is called a hallucination. So check every answer: run it yourself, ask it to explain each line, and compare with the official docs.

People often paste AI code they cannot explain, it works, and they move on. Then in a viva or a job interview they cannot say what it does. A simple rule: if you cannot explain a line, you do not keep it.

Watch for red flags in an answer: a much longer solution than the problem needs, words you have never seen in your lessons, a command that deletes things, or a tool or website you cannot find anywhere else. When you see one, slow down and ask "why?".
